Analysing the trends from Africa

In October 1998, ACCORD launched the long-awaited Conflict Trends magazine. As its name suggests the publication focuses on reporting on and analysing trends in current and emerging conflicts on the continent of Africa.

From the introduction to the first edition, by ACCORD's Executive Director, Vasu Gounden:

"The world today is characterised by political and economic chaos existing alongside unprecedented progress in science and technology… a paradox of failure and progress co-existing in a world of predictable uncertainty.

Africa exists and survives in this new paradigm. To the uncritical yet interested observer of African affairs, her survival belies the many death defying challenging that confront her people—yet it is Africa's survival that bears testimony to her ability to meet these challenges.

It is in this context that we launch our magazine. We hope to give the interested observer deeper insight into the many challenges that confront us in Africa. To the many other Africans who share this drama with us, we hope to provide a balanced and objective understanding of our challenges and our numerous yet unrecorded successes at meeting these challenges."

In all, over 30 issues have now been produced, some of them in partnership with UN agencies, all of them on an extremely limited budget, and by ACCORD staff with a range of other demands competing for limited time. We are proud of this, our flagship publication. All issues are available for download in PDF format, from the drop-down menu on the left.

Contribute to Conflict Trends?

ACCORD is presently soliciting contributions for Conflict Trends 2008, Issue 2. This General Issue will cover a range of topics related to Africa (conflict, conflict resolution, peace, security and development, politics, specific regional and/or country case-studies/analyses etc). Articles must be 2500-3000 words in length, and the deadline for the submission of the complete article is 7 May 2008.
