SACOIR overview presented to DIRCO

On 19 January 2016 the Executive Director of ACCORD, Mr Vasu Gounden, attended a meeting with H.E. Nkoane Mashabane, the South African Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, along with the other members of the South African Council on International Relations (SACOIR). The meeting with the Minister was to present an overview of SACOIR's activities since its establishment.

ACCORD's Executive Director participates in AWEPA Seminar at Belgian Parliament on violence and extremism

On 08-09 October 2015 ACCORD's Founder and Executive Director, Mr Vasu Gounden, addressed a High Level Seminar on "Peace, Security and Sustainable Development: The Role of African and European Parliaments in Tackling the Root causes and Consequences of Violent Extremism and Terrorism". The Seminar was hosted by the Association of European Parliamentarians with Africa (AWEPA), and held at the Belgian Senate in Brussels.

ACCORD's Executive Director participates in World Bank forum on fragility, conflict and violence

Increasing recognition of the relationships and dynamics between state fragility, conflict and violence now positions these issues amongst the central foci of conflict and development practitioners worldwide. It is in this light that ACCORD's Founder and Executive Director participated in the World Bank Group's Fragility, Conflict and Violence Forum in Washington DC, USA on 11-13 February 2015. Convened by Ms Betty Bigombe, the World Bank Group's Senior Director of its Fragility, Conflict and Violence Cross-Cutting Solutions Area, the Forum strived to unite political leaders, policymakers, academics, activists, and civil society organisations towards strengthening their responses and supporting countries mired by fragility, conflict, and violence.

ACCORD/TfP attends the 21st Annual Conference of the IAPTC

As the current civilian chair of the International Association of Peacekeeping Training Centres (IAPTC) Executive Committee, the Training for Peace (TfP) Programme at ACCORD participated in the 21st Annual Conference of the IAPTC. The Conference was organised by the Brazilian Peace Operations Joint Training Centre, with the support of Brazil's Ministry of Defence and the Brazilian Army and hosted by the Centro Conjunto de Operações de Paz do Brasil (CCOPAB) from 28 September – 1 October 2015, in Brasilia, Brazil. The theme for the Conference was "Enhancing the Effectiveness of Training through Partnerships, Integration and Evaluation". The Conference provided a platform for ACCORD/TfP to promote key issues on African peace operations and to broaden the understanding of the civilian dimension of peace operations within the international peacekeeping training community.

ACCORD's Executive Director participates in German Federal Foreign Office’s Mediation Expert Meeting

On 05 October 2015 ACCORD's Founder and Executive Director, Mr Vasu Gounden, participated in the German Federal Foreign Office's Mediation Expert Meeting 2015, which was held in Berlin, Germany. The meeting focused on "Identifying Mediation Entry Points", and looked at political and methodological entry points, with a focus on Sudan as a case study of how conflict analysis could be applied to identify potential for mediation.

Vasu Gounden appointed to serve on the South African Council on International Relations (SACOIR)

The Founder and Executive Director of ACCORD, Vasu Gounden, has been appointed by the Government of South Africa to serve on the South African Council on International Relations (SACOIR). ACCORD congratulates former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Aziz Pahad, on his appointment as Chair of SAICOR. Mr Pahad has for some years acted as ACCORD's senior political advisor. The Council was officially launched in Pretoria by the South African Minister of the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO), Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane.

Official visit to ACCORD by Minister of Communication and National Reconciliation of Central African Republic

ACCORD hosted the Minister of Communication and Reconciliation from the Central African Republic (CAR), H.E. Madam Antoinette Montaigne Moussa, from 30th May-2nd June, in Durban, South Africa. The visit was intended to explore possible collaborative activities and partnership between the Ministry and ACCORD in the areas of reconciliation and nation-building in CAR.

ACCORD Executive Director calls for 21st century to be the 'century of peace' at United Nations special event

Speaking at a side event held during the Special Event of the President of the United Nations General Assembly on the Follow-Up Efforts Made Towards Achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) on 26 September 2013 in New York, Mr Vasu Gounden, Founder and Executive Director of ACCORD, called to make the post-2015 development agenda one that transforms the 21st century into a 'century of peace.'
