The Founder and Executive Director of ACCORD, Vasu Gounden, was invited by the South African Department of Foreign Affairs to attend a roundtable discussion on the review of the first six months of South Africa’s membership of the United Nations Security Council, which was held on 3 August 2007 at The Union Buildings.
The Founder and Executive Director of ACCORD, Vasu Gounden, was invited by USAID South Africa to attend a roundtable discussion on AFRICOM (United States Africa Command), the new unified combatant command of the U.S. military.
On Monday, 18 June 2007, the Founder and Executive Director of ACCORD, Vasu Gounden, welcomed the South African Ambassador to Indonesia, H.E. Ambassador Memela, to ACCORD House. During his visit His Excellency was briefed on ACCORD’s current activities as well as the Africa Peace Centre project.
The Founder and Executive Director of ACCORD, Vasu Gounden, was invited by the British High Commission to South Africa, The Rt Honourable Paul Boateng, to attended a reception to mark Her Majesty The Queen’s Birthday. The reception was held on 1 June in Pretoria and coincided with Prime Minister Tony Blair’s visit to South Africa.
On Friday,18 May 2007, the Project Director from Freedom House Southern Africa, Vukasin Petrovic, and Helen Barnes (their Senior Programme Officer) visited ACCORD House where they met with ACCORD staff headed by the Deputy Director of ACCORD, Jerome Sachane.
On Thursday, 26 April and Friday 27 April ACCORD hosted separate visits from parties from both sides to the conflict in Sri Lanka.
The Founder and Executive Director of ACCORD, Vasu Gounden, welcomed Mr. Jan Pronk, the former Dutch Minister for Development Cooperation and the former Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General in Sudan, to ACCORD House on Wednesday, 28 June 2007.

Mr. Pronk was in Durban to attend the SANPAD Poverty Challenge 2007 Conference, where he was a resource person. Mr. Gounden met Mr. Pronk when they shared at platform at the Dutch United Nations Student Association Utrecht (DUNSA-Utrecht) conference on international conflicts, entitled ‘A Struggle for Peace’, which was held at the University of Utrecht on 9 June 2007. Mr. Gounden was the keynote speaker.
In the 1970’s Mr. Pronk was a member of Parliament for the Social-Democratic Party (Partij van de Arbeid) and Minister for Development Cooperation. In the first half of the 1980’s he worked as an international civil servant for the United Nations (UNCTAD) in Geneva. He then returned to Dutch politics and again became Minister for Development Cooperation and later Minister of Environment. In 2002 he left Dutch politics and was appointed as a Professor at the Institute of Social Studies (ISS) in The Hague. From mid 2004 until the end of 2006 Mr. Pronk was the Special Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations in Sudan, where he led the UN peacekeeping operation (UNMIS). Mr. Pronk returned to his position as Professor of Theory and Practice of International Development at the Institute of Social Studies in The Hague in January 2007, having been given special leave to take up his UN position in Sudan.
In November 2006 ACCORD, in partnership with the United Nations Mission in Sudan, conducted an in-mission Civil Military Coordination course in Khartoum, Sudan. The course was conducted as part of ACCORD’s African Civil Military Coordination Programme, an on-going programme meant to enhance the Civil Military Coordination capacity of African member states that contribute troops to peacekeeping operations.
While at ACCORD Mr. Pronk addressed ACCORD’s programme Staff (with the exception of those traveling) on his experience in Sudan, as well as discussing generally the causes of conflicts in Africa, including the impact of poverty and development.

The Founder and Executive Director of ACCORD, Vasu Gounden, was recently invited by the Dutch United Nations Student Association Utrecht (DUNSA-Utrecht), to be the Keynote speaker at their conference on international conflicts, entitled ‘A Struggle for Peace’. The conference was organized by DUNSA, in collaboration with the Netherlands United Nations Association (NVVN).
On Wednesday, 23 May 2007, the Founder and Executive Director of ACCORD, Mr. Vasu Gounden, welcomed Mr. Steven Uhlfelder, the Chairman of the Fulbright Foreign Scholarships Board (FSB), to ACCORD House. Accompanying Mr. Uhlfelder was the United States Consul General in Durban, Mr. Eugene Young and Ms Lucy Hoffman, the Coordinator of Fulbright Programmes at the United States Embassy in Pretoria.
The Founder and Executive Director of ACCORD, Vasu Gounden, was invited by the United Nations’ ‘Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People’, to be a resource person at the United Nations’ ‘Public Forum in Support of Israeli-Palestinian Peace’, which was held at the University of Pretoria, in South Africa on 11 May.
The Founder and Executive Director of ACCORD, Vasu Gounden, was invited by the National Committee for International Cooperation and Sustainable Development (NCDO), who are based in Amsterdam, to be a resource person at the Dutch Africa Day, which was held on 14 April in The Hague.
