ACCORD's Burundi Intervention will conduct a dialogue session for local civil society organizations and security forces as part of a series of initiatives to contribute to peace efforts in Burundi before, during and after the May to September 2010 elections.
As part of a series of initiatives planned by ACCORD to promote and sustain peace in Burundi before, during and after the upcoming elections, the Burundi Intervention conducted a conflict management training session for youth leaders from 21-26 February 2010 in Ngozi.
ACCORD’s Burundi Intervention conducted a capacity building training in Conflict Management skills from 29 September - 1 October 2009 in Bujumbura, Burundi for twenty-three staff members of the Information, Counseling, Legal Assistance (ICLA) Programme of the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) Burundi.
ACCORD conducted a Strategy Planning Session from 17-23 July 2009 in Bujumbura, Burundi for nine staff members of the Office for Strategic Studies and Development, also known as the Bureau d’Etudes Stratégiques et de Développement (BESD). BESD is located within the Office of the Presidency of the Republic of Burundi and was established as a structure to advise the Government of Burundi on strategies to manage ongoing crisis and to maintain coherence in policy making and implementation.
Pursuant to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between ACCORD and the Presidency of the Republic of Burundi, ACCORD’s role is to strengthen the capacity of BESD by providing oversight, training, and facilitation of strategy development for the staff of BESD. The Strategy Planning Session was a follow up activity to one held in Durban, South Africa in June 2009 for BESD staff members. The Session was chaired by Dr. Alioune Sall of the African Futures Institute and focused on skills for strategic planning.
As part of ACCORD’s peace building work in Burundi ACCORD has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Republic of Burundi which aims to support the establishment of an Office for Strategic Studies and Development (OSSD) in the Office of the President of Burundi.
On 6 March 2008 the Founder and Executive Director of ACCORD, Vasu Gounden, was invited to meet with Mr. Frydenlund at the Norwegian Embassy in Pretoria. Mr. Frydenlund is the Head of the Department responsible for the Horn and Central Africa (including Burundi) at the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The main focus of the meeting was ACCORD’s work in Burundi.
As part of a series of initiatives geared towards violence prevention during the May to September 2010 communal, presidential, legislative and local elections in Burundi, ACCORD’s Burundi Office will conduct conflict management training for youth leaders.
The ACCORD Burundi Intervention conducted a capacity building training in election observation and mediation for COSOME (Coalition de la Société Civile pour le Monitoring des Elections), and ABR (Association Burundaise des Radiodiffuseurs) from 10 - 13 August 2009 in Bujumbura, Burundi. The training was observed by representatives from the National Independent Electoral Commission (CENI, who managers the electoral process in Burundi) and the National Council for Communication (who supervisors media activities in Burundi).
ACCORD’s Burundi Office conducted a capacity-building training in election-related conflict management for COSOME (Coalition de la Société Civile pour le Monitoring des Elections) and ABR (Association Burundaise des Radiodiffuseurs) from 8-10 July 2009 in Bujumbura, Burundi.
Burundi recently made the front page of a UK newspaper site: (guardian.co.uk), but of particular interest to ACCORD is that part of this article is a slideshow with a voice clip that discusses the issues of Burundian refugees/returnees.
During this slideshow they mention ACCORD's work with the returnees (on the management of land conflict) and included in the slideshow is 2 photos taken of the ACCORD Rumonge office. The first one is of our Coordinator of the office, Joseph. And the second photo is of some of the Rumonge office staff and beneficiaries inside our office.
ACCORD’s Burundi Intervention held a conflict management training for women civil society leaders in Burundi from 18-20 February 2008 at the Sun Safari Hotel in Bujumbura, Burundi. This training was facilitated by Kemi Ogunsanya, ACCORD trainer and gender specialist, and Adelin Hatungimana, Senior Progamme Officer at the Burundi Office.
