Strengthening the AUC member states’ capability to plan, manage and implement PSOs on the African continent.

ACCORD participated in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Regional Peacekeeping Training Centres (RPTC) which held a planned, organised and coordinated Integrated Missions Operational Commanders and Leadership Workshop from 27 to 31 August 2018 in Harare, Zimbabwe.

The workshop brought together Senior Mission Leadership of the SADC region and with the aim to enhance the understanding of mission leadership’s functions in Peace support operations (PSOs). The workshop further aimed to prepare the participants for the roles in the October 2018 scheduled Command Post Exercise (CPX). In line with the multidimensional nature of PSOs and ACCORD’s expertise on issues of the civilian component in PSOs, ACCORD was invited to participate in the workshop to provide resource knowledge on: “The Role of the Civilian Component in Peace Missions: Lessons Learned from Peace Missions on the African continent”.

ACCORD’s/Training for Peace (TfP) Programmes participation in the training of peace operations supports its strategic goal to strengthen the African Union Commission (AUC), Regional Economic Committees/Regional Mechanisms (RECs)/(RMs) and member states’ capability to plan, manage and implement PSOs on the continent, specifically through the enhancement of the African Stand by Forces capacities and in particular, the civilian component. This initiative further seeks to improve the sustainable capacity of PSOs on the continent through ensuring effective civilian peacekeeper effectiveness, professionalism, positive conduct and discipline, planning, management and execution of mission tasks. This will thus improve the operational capability and functioning of organisational systems in the United Nations (UN), African Union (AU), RECs/RMs, member states and mission structures.

The Training for Peace Programme at ACCORD is an initiative funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

ACCORD/TfP was represented by Brig. Gen. James Machakaire, Coordinator, Peacekeeping Unit.
