Strengthening ECCAS' Mediation Support Capacity through provision of technical expertise.

In the framework of continued engagement between the African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (ACCORD) and ECCAS, ACCORD is providing technical support to the ECCAS Mediation and Preventive Diplomacy Unit.

To provide this support, the deployment of Mr Adelin Hatungimana, Deputy Operations Coordinator at the ACCORD Burundi Office, commenced in March 2017 for a period of one month in the ECCAS offices in Libreville, Gabon. During the deployment, Mr Hatungimana undertook a needs assessment as well as identified and discussed strategies to enhance the ECCAS mediation and preventive diplomacy efforts as well as to strengthen the ECCAS’ Central Africa’s Early Warning Mechanism (MARAC in French– Mecanisme d’Alerte Rapide d’Afrique Centrale).

Following this positive engagement and collaboration with ECCAS, this support continues with the second deployment having commenced in June 2017. This cooperation with ECCAS and other Regional Economic Communities/Regional Mechanisms (RECs/RMs) as well as the Continental institutions such the African Union (AU) aligns with ACCORD’s vision to mitigate conflicts by promoting African Solutions to African Challenges.
