ACCORD's KPD participates in meeting with African national statistical institutions to interrogate use of statistics in measuring development.

Peace, rule of law and governance are measurable and a key component of development indicators in Africa. This was the conclusion of a workshop held from 11-12 June 2014 at the African Union Commission in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Hosted by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), this workshop sought to consolidate the African position on the inclusion of peace, rule of law and governance, as part of the development indicators for the post-2015 development agenda.

ACCORD was represented at this event by Dr Candice Moore, Senior Researcher in the Knowledge Production Department. The event brought together representatives from some 20 African national statistical institutions, along with experts in peace and security from a number of African institutions, and those further afield. It was a unique combination of statistical and security and governance expertise. The meeting served to identify specific indicators for the Peace and Security Pillar of the African Common Position (CAP) on the post-2015 Agenda.

ACCORD’s participation in this event stems from the organisation’s vision of strengthening the continent’s ability to resolve the issues affecting it. This event was a valuable step in taking stock of Africa’s existing initiatives in the area of standard-setting in peace and good governance.

ACCORD will continue to interrogate the use of statistics and indicators in the fields of conflicts, peace and governance. The organisation is committed to assisting in initiatives that help to shape development debates on the continent and in global multilateral institutions driving international efforts toward the post-2015 development agenda.
