The African Peacebuilding Coordination Programme teaches conflict sensitivity skills to grassroots civil society organisations in South Sudan.

The Peacebuilding Unit at ACCORD through the African Peacebuilding Coordination Programme (APCP) is focused on supporting coherence and coordination in peacebuilding contexts in Africa towards strengthening stability, security, peace, justice and sustainable development. One of the key approaches the APCP uses to achieve its objective is through training. In 2014, the APCP programme started conducting trainings on Conflict Sensitivity for national Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in South Sudan. The training enhanced the capacity of CSOs working in peacebuilding processes to apply Conflict Sensitivity in the design and implementation of peacebuilding programmes that contribute to sustainable peace.

Continuing its focus on Conflict Sensitivity in South Sudan, the APCP held a training from 16-18 March 2016 in Torit, South Sudan entitled Training of Grassroots Peacebuilding, Humanitarian, and Development Actors on Conflict Sensitive Approaches to Development, Humanitarian Assistance and Peacebuilding. The training aimed to disseminate Conflict Sensitivity skills to the grassroots in Eastern Equatoria State and increase the pool of peacebuilding, development and humanitarian practitioners cognisant of applying Conflict Sensitivity in their development, humanitarian and peacebuilding interventions. The course also provided a platform for previous trainees on Conflict Sensitivity to put into practice the skills from previous trainings conducted by ACCORD.

Though the application of presentations, case studies and practical exercises, the training further built the overall competence of the targeted CSOs to consolidate their capacity in applying Conflict Sensitivity in their interventions to enhance effective peacebuilding in South Sudan. This initiative will help ACCORD’s Peacebuilding Unit to continuously understand the evolving context of South Sudan, thus supporting programme conceptualization and implementation.

The Peacebuilding Unit was represented by Ms Stephanie de Freitas, Programme Officer. The African Peacebuilding Coordination Programme at ACCORD is an initiative funded by the Government of Finland since 2007.
