CPPC 2009 Course Dates
The Civilian Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding Course (CPPC) series is the flagship training series of the TfP/ACCORD Programme. The series is conducted at primarily three levels, namely, the Mission Preparedness Level (an introductory course focusing broadly on the peacekeeping environment and related themes); the Specialised Level (focusing mainly on Conflict Management); and the In-mission Level (which is tailor-made to the precise needs of a specific mission). The following courses are scheduled for 2009:
CPPC Mission Preparedness Courses
1. TfP African Union Mission for Somalia (AMISOM) Mission Preparedness CPPC
09 – 13 February 2009 Nairobi, Kenya (This course is now closed)
The TfP Programme will be conducting a Mission Preparedness CPPC for senior leadership and civilian, military and police staff of AMISOM from 9 – 13 February in Nairobi, Kenya. The course is aimed at contributing to the readiness and professionalism of AMISOM personnel and thus to the chances for more effective mission implementation. The five (5) day integrated training will have a modular design and will accommodate a maximum of forty (40) participants. It will be an interactive course and participants will be invited to engage in discussions, share experiences and partake in syndicate exercises which will be followed by thorough debriefing sessions.
An underlying objective of the training will be to familiarise AMISOM personnel with the Somali context including inter alia an analysis and understanding of the conflict, cultural sensitisation and tolerance, and to assist them understand their role in fulfilling the mandate and objectives of the mission.

2. TfP CPPC: Administration & Finance Specialisation for AMISOM
16 – 18 February, Nairobi, Kenya (This course is now closed)
The TfP Programme will be conducting an Administration and Finance Specialisation Course for AMISOM) from 16 – 18 February in Nairobi, Kenya.
The Administration and Finance Specialisation Course is aimed at assisting AMISOM admin and finance staff better understand (within the broad context of mission support) their critical role in supporting the mission in the endeavour to accomplish its mandate. A number of areas will be covered including, Financial Rules and Regulations, Human Resource Management and Procurement and Resource Management. The training will be conducted with the support of the United Nations Department of Peacekeeping Operations - African Union Peace Support Team (UN DPKO - AU PST) based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and will be joined also by the AU Directors of Administration and Human Resource Development, Programming, Finance, Budgeting and Accounting and Internal Audit.

2. TfP CPPC: Southern Africa Development Community Brigade Sub-region
15 – 18 April Maputo, Mozambique
The TfP Programme will conduct a CPPC for the Southern Africa Development Community Brigade (SADCBRIG) from 15 – 18 April in Maputo, Mozambique. The course will be a four (4) day residential course that will be part of the preparations ahead of the SADC Command Post Exercise (CPX) scheduled for 20 – 24 April and the Field Training Exercise (FTX) to be held in September. It will also be linked in the overall to the work that the TfP Programme is undertaking vis-à-vis support to the AU and the RECs/RMs with the development of the civilian dimension of the respective Regional Brigades.
The selection of participants for the course will be an internal process coordinated by the SADC Secretariat.
3. TfP CPPC: Eastern Africa Standby Brigade Sub-region
05 – 09 October Nairobi Kenya (Dates to be confirmed)
The TfP Programme will conduct a Mission Preparedness CPPC for Eastern Africa Standby Brigade (EASBRIG) Sub-region from 05 – 09 October in Nairobi, Kenya. The course will be linked to the ongoing support of the TfP Programme with the development of the civilian dimension of the EASBRIG. The selection of participants for the course will be an internal process but a limited amount of spaces will be reserved for open application from prospective and eligible East Africans working in or intending to work in peacekeeping and/or peacebuilding related fields.
This course will be a five (5) day residential course and will accommodate approximately twenty-five (25) participants. It will consist of a number of modules classified under two broad areas, namely, the theoretical aspects of modern day, multidimensional peace operations and specialised themes such as, protection of civilians, conduct and discipline and HIV/AIDs in peacekeeping.

CPPC Specialised/In Mission Courses
Conflict Management Courses
The Conflict Management for Peacekeepers and Peacebuilders Course evolved out of a combination of the TfP Programme’s specialised focus on peacekeeping with ACCORD’s specialised focus on conflict management. The course seeks to assist participants to develop a firm understanding of conflict; to harness their (awareness of) conflict management skills and methods; and just as important, to help them understand how and when they can most appropriately utilise and apply their skills so as to become more effective conflict mitigators. This will ultimately contribute to the on-going efforts by the UN, the AU and their various partners in peace and security to more successfully facilitate the transformation from conflict to durable peace.
The following Conflict Management courses will be conducted in 2009:
1. TfP CPPC: Conflict Management for Peacekeepers and Peacebuilders Course for the United Nations Operations in Cote d’Ivoire (UNOCI)
25 – 27 February 2009 Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire (This course is now closed)
The TfP Programme will conduct a Conflict Management for Peacekeepers and Peacebuilders Course for UNOCI from 25 – 27 February 2009 in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire. The three (3) day course will include staff from different sections of the mission, particularly the Civil Affairs Section, as well as from the United Nations Country Team.

2. TfP CPP: Conflict Management for Peacekeepers and Peacebuilders Course for the African Union - United Nations Hybrid Mission in Darfur (UNAMID)
03 – 05 June 2009 (Dates and Venue to be confirmed)
The TfP Programme will conduct a three (3) day Conflict Management for Peacekeepers and Peacebuilders Course for UNAMID. The three (3) day course will include staff from different sections of the mission, particularly the Civil Affairs Section, as well as from the United Nations Country Team.
