Strengthening mediation capacities for conflict management in the IGAD region.

ACCORD in collaboration with the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Mediation Support Unit (MSU) conducted a three-day training for the South Sudan Mediation Committee in preparation for their engagement in the Sudanese Peace Talks. The training was held from 18-20 November 2019 in Juba, South Sudan.

In December 2018, Sudan underwent a major shift of political power, that resulted in the ousting of former President Omar al-Bashir. The country experienced violent political conflict that saw the deaths of many. With the negotiation process underway, South Sudan who are engaged in the process, have established the South Sudan Mediation Committee for the Sudanese Peace Talks. The Secretariat indicated their need to strengthen their skills and capacities, participated in the training that was initiated by the IGAD MSU.

The training was tailored to speak to the issues of Sudan and was an opportunity for the mediators to share best practices and lessons learned on mediation practices. Significant of the training was the conflict analysis of the situation which brought about an enhanced understanding of the actors and issues presently taking place in Sudan. The lessons on mediation provided the space for mediators to raise issues and anticipate scenarios to determine the ways in which these need to be addressed during the negotiation process.

Participants indicated their need for ongoing training during the negotiation process and further indicated that the skills gained in the training will help them in the process. ACCORD and IGAD MSU continue its collaboration towards sustaining peace in the IGAD region.
