Africa has lost a strong, progressive and visionary leader.

ACCORD learnt with shock and deep sadness of the untimely death of Police Commissioner Christine Alalo, the acting Police Commissioner of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).

Police Commissioner Christine Alalo was among the passengers on board Ethiopian Airlines flight ET302 from Addis Ababa to Nairobi, which crashed a few minutes after taking-off on 10 March 2019.

Police Commissioner Alalo will be remembered for her progressive thinking, her vibrant energy, her positive outlook on life, as well as for her dedication, commitment and professionalism, which was seen through her work with the AMISOM Police component since 2015. The Commissioner was an ardent advocate for the inclusion of women in Peace Support Operations. She spoke with inspiration on how women could effectively contribute to securing sustainable peace in Somalia and elsewhere on the African continent. She also argued that discrimination against women, based on culture and traditions, was a mere façade for deliberate exclusion and stereotyping of gender roles, which has no place in contemporary times.

ACCORD extends its condolences to her family, to AMISOM and to the Government and the people of the Republic of Uganda.

Her spirit and legacy live on!
