Conflict management for peacekeepers

ACCORD’s Training for Peace (TfP) Programme is in the final stages of the development of its “Conflict Management for Peacekeepers” handbook. The handbook serves as a practical guide to managing conflict in contemporary complex peace operations, and provides a broad introduction to all aspects of conflict management.

It is targeted at the various categories of persons that will participate in peace missions, including military, police, civilian mission personnel, and humanitarian aid workers.

One of the outcomes of this development process was the conducting of a train-the-trainers workshop from 26 February – 2 March in Durban, South Africa with the intention of introducing the handbook to regional and international stakeholders, and discussing how it can be used as a training tool. The workshop was attended by twenty participants from regional peacekeeping training centers, United Nations missions in Africa (Liberia, Congo, Sudan), the African Union Mission in Sudan’s Darfur Integrated Task Force (AMIS/DITF), the Integrated Training Service (ITS) of the United Nations Department of Peacekeeping Operations (UNDPKO), the South African National War College (SANWC), the South African Police Services (SAPS), and ACCORD.
