ACCORD Programmes Internship Call

ACCORD is a non-governmental conflict management institute headquartered in Durban, South Africa. It was established in 1992 to impact on the process of negotiation and conflict resolution in South Africa. Over its thirty-year history, ACCORD’s focus has expanded across Africa ACCORD strives to offer innovative and effective African solutions to African challenges.

The ACCORD internship programme provides interns with an opportunity to learn from the various areas of expertise offered by ACCORD’s staff, as well as ACCORD’s various conflict resolution projects. These projects are subject to change based on the work programme of each unit and are designed to challenge and take advantage of the capabilities that the intern brings to the organisation. All internship placements are based on the expertise and personal interests of the intern, as revealed in and derived from CVs. Interns will work under supervision and guidance while performing a variety of duties.

The advertised position requires an enthusiastic multitasker with some activity planning and implementation experience, good judgement, discretion, attention to detail, creativity, and the ability to prioritize. It is important that the candidate has good communication skills, the ability to work calmly under pressure. The selected candidates will go through a management assessment following the internship period with the possibility of a three-month extension.

Responsibilities

  • Provide programme specific research support, assist with drafting concept papers, research articles, activity reports and news items;  
  • Administrative support to the implementation of programme specific activities by drafting memos and budgets;
  • Liaise with ACCORD’s Events team and other internal staff when supporting the implementation of programme work plan activities; and
  • Any other duty as assigned by the General Manager of Programmes.

Qualifications and skills

  • Honours or Master’s degree in International Relations, Peace and Security and or Conflict Resolution;
  • Knowledge and experience in peacebuilding contexts and/or of issues;
  • Experience in organising events and logistics;
  • Good writing skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; and
  • Team-oriented, meticulous, and enthusiastic.

Stipend

ACCORD Internship Policy allows for a nominal stipend that will help balance expenses such as housing and food.
