Position Overview
ACCORD is seeking to appoint a Researcher within its Research Unit to support a project focused on Sustainable Coalitions at Local Government Level in South Africa.
The successful candidate will contribute to research, analysis, and project implementation related to coalition politics in South Africa. The role includes both analytical research functions and project coordination responsibilities.
The Researcher will report to the General Manager: Research.
Contract Duration: Fixed-term (12 months)
Key Responsibilities
The incumbent will be responsible for, but not limited to:
- Conducting research and analysis on coalition governance in South Africa, Africa, and internationally
- Monitoring and analysing political developments and trends related to coalition politics, particularly at local government level
- Supporting the planning and coordination of project activities, including meetings, seminars, and training sessions
- Assisting with the preparation of reports, policy briefs, concept notes, and presentations
- Providing logistical and administrative support for project implementation
- Participating in and contributing to internal and external meetings related to the project
- Supporting follow-up processes and documentation of project activities
- Performing any other duties as assigned by the supervisor
Minimum Requirements
Education
A postgraduate qualification in Political Science, International Relations, or a related field relevant to governance, peace, and security
Skills and Experience
- Demonstrated knowledge of, and interest in, coalition governance—particularly within South African local government
- Strong research, analytical, and writing skills
- Good organisational, administrative, and coordination abilities
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Experience with data analysis tools will be an advantage
- Excellent communication skills in English; proficiency in an additional South African official language will be an advantage
- Strong attention to detail and ability to work effectively in a team
