ACCORD is currently seeking applicants for the position of research intern within the Research Unit. This internship has an initial contract for a period of 6 months, with the possibility of an extension.  

About ACCORD

The African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (ACCORD) is a South African-based civil society institution working throughout Africa to bring creative African solutions to the challenges posed by conflict on the continent.  ACCORD’s primary aim is to influence political developments by bringing conflict resolution, dialogue and institutional development to the forefront as an alternative to armed violence and protracted conflict.  ACCORD specialises in conflict management, analysis and prevention and intervenes in conflicts through mediation, negotiation, training, research, and conflict analysis.

Duties and Responsibilities

The intern will work within the Research Unit under a Project focussing on Sustainable Coalitions at Local Government Level in South Africa. The Project will engage in research, analysis, and capacity building in the area of coalition governments in South Africa and will be implemented for an initial period of 12 months from January 2024 to December 2024. 

Under the overall supervision of the General Manager: Research, the intern’s tasks will include, but will not be limited to:

  1. Identifying, analysing, monitoring and compiling political developments and trends as they relate to coalition politics in South Africa, particularly at local government level
  2. Assistance with relevant research on coalitions in South Africa, Africa and internationally
  3. Providing technical, logistical and coordination support to the Project’s activities including organising relevant meetings, seminars, and trainings
  4. Assistance with the preparation of reports and follow-ups on events as they relate to the Project
  5. Developing and draft key documents, such as concept notes, presentations, policy briefs etc.
  6. Participating and contribute to relevant meetings relating to the Project
  7. Performing other tasks as assigned by the supervisor

Skills and Experience:

  • Knowledgeable and interest in the field of coalition governance, specifically at local government level in South Africa
  • Excellent administrative and logistical skills
  • Experienced with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel
  • Ability to use data analytics (e.g. R) would be an advantage
  • Good research and writing skills
  • Proficiency in English, and another South African official language
  • Team-ordinated, meticulous and enthusiastic

The intern will be based at ACCORD’s offices in Durban, South Africa. 

Education

A post-graduate qualification in one of the following disciplines: Political Science, International Relations, and/or any relevant field directly related to governance, peace and security.

Remuneration

The intern will receive a monthly stipend for the duration of the internship.
