Following the changed mandate of the UN peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), ACCORD has recently engaged with key peacebuilding stakeholders to consolidate sustainable peace efforts in the country.
During a five-day peacebuilding training course hosted by ACCORD in Lubumbashi DRC from 19-23 July, discussions focused on the current post-conflict stabilisation phase in the DRC, the change of the UN Peacekeeping Mission to a Stabilisation Mission, and the 2011 – 2013 national elections. The training examined how these dynamics will affect the peacebuilding process in DRC.
The workshop was opened by the representative of the African Union Commission to the DRC, the South African Consul, Head of the UN Mission in Lubumbashi and a ministerial representative of the State Governor. The course brought together representatives from the Government of DRC, Civil Society Organisations and UN Agencies charged with decision-making and policy development on peacebuilding undertakings in the DRC.
The training enhanced the networking and coherence in peacebuilding approaches. It also broadened participants’ knowledge and skills as well as developed local ownership and coordination in peacebuilding.
ACCORD has been engaged in DRC since 2002 and its Peacebuilding Unit will continue to engage in follow-up activities to contribute to policy development and capacity building for sustainable peace in DRC.
