Aleu Garang

Head of the Mission of IGAD to the Republic of South Sudan

Dr. Garang, Head of the Mission of IGAD to the Republic of South Sudan, took up the new positing since February 2021. Dr. Garang have served for the last 7 years as Coordinator then Director of Mediation Support Unit (MSU) – 2013 – 2021 at the IGAD Secretariat in Djibouti. MSU is a function of preventive diplomacy and mediation with further focus on peace building, dialogue and reconciliation and building national institutions capacities, CSOs, Women and Youth Groups. MSU engages private sector to invest in conflict prevention and management as well supporting Youth and Women representation at IGAD Policy organs meetings.

Dr. Garang has served in the Ministry of Justice formally known Ministry of Legal Affairs and Constitutional Development in various capacities from junior to senior positions from 2002 – 2013. Served as Senior Legal Counsel and Legal/Policy Advisor to several public institutions including Ministries, Commissions, Universities and international negotiation teams. Served as Director-General for Investigation and Legal Services at the South Sudan Anti-Corruption Commission 2007 – 2009, Legal Counsel & Advisor to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation 2011 – 2013. Previous responsibilities included service in various legal capacities as prosecutor, legal drafter, legal advisor, and litigator at various assignments by the Ministry of Justice to departments of the Government of Sudan and South Sudan. 

Dr. Garang, holds LLB (Cairo University) in Law, LLM General in Law, a Ph.D. in Public International Law (Elziem Elazhari University) and MA (MAPSA) in Peace and Security Studies from Addis Ababa University. Experienced in legal field, diplomacy, academic research, leadership nationally in Sudan, South Sudan and the region.
