Tizie Maphalala

Passionate Educator

Tizie is a passionate educator whose experience in the field spans more than 35 years.  Having started her career as a secondary school teacher, she went on to become a teacher educator first at a teacher’s college and then at the University of Swaziland for about 15 years.  Feeling the urge to engage in education policy and strategy, she then joined UNICEF where she worked for 17 years as Education Specialist in several countries in Eastern and Southern Africa including Eswatini, Ethiopia, South Sudan and Zambia and as well as in the Regional Office based in Nairobi.

She has contributed to evidence generation in the education sector on effective learning environments, curriculum development, equity and gender in education, schools as safe places for learning, stimulating inquiry and creativity in girls and boys particularly in low-resource environments.  She is a member of the African Women’s Peace and Development Foundation (AWPDF).
