The Training for Peace (TfP) Programme in collaboration with the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) Regional Peacekeeping Training Centre (RPTC) conducted a Civil Military Coordination Course (CIMIC) and Conflict Management for Peacekeepers and Peacebuilders Course (CM4PK) for the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) Standby Force (SSF) in collaboration with the SADC Regional Peacekeeping Training Centre from 27 – 31 July 2009 in Harare, Zimbabwe.
On Thursday, 30 July 2009 ACCORD hosted international actor and film director Nandita Das. Ms Das was in Durban to attend the Durban International Film Festival where her first film as a director, Firaaq, was being launched. The film deals with the issue of religious violence and persecution of beliefs, set against the sectarian violence that took place in Gujarat in 2002, in which 3000 Muslims were killed.
ACCORD conducted a Strategy Planning Session from 17-23 July 2009 in Bujumbura, Burundi for nine staff members of the Office for Strategic Studies and Development, also known as the Bureau d’Etudes Stratégiques et de Développement (BESD). BESD is located within the Office of the Presidency of the Republic of Burundi and was established as a structure to advise the Government of Burundi on strategies to manage ongoing crisis and to maintain coherence in policy making and implementation.
Pursuant to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between ACCORD and the Presidency of the Republic of Burundi, ACCORD’s role is to strengthen the capacity of BESD by providing oversight, training, and facilitation of strategy development for the staff of BESD. The Strategy Planning Session was a follow up activity to one held in Durban, South Africa in June 2009 for BESD staff members. The Session was chaired by Dr. Alioune Sall of the African Futures Institute and focused on skills for strategic planning.
The Founder and Executive Director of ACCORD, Vasu Gounden, accompanied by Hayden Allen (General Manager: Corporate Affairs, ACCORD) and Sunitha Singh (General Manager: Finance and Administration, ACCORD) traveled to New York and Washington between the 8th and 14th of July 2009. While in New York Mr. Gounden had a series of meetings with various United Nations (UN) departments as ACCORD works closely with many UN agencies such as the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations (UNDPKO) on ACCORD’s Peacekeeping programme and the UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) on land mediation in Burundi.
ACCORD’s Burundi Office conducted a capacity-building training in election-related conflict management for COSOME (Coalition de la Société Civile pour le Monitoring des Elections) and ABR (Association Burundaise des Radiodiffuseurs) from 8-10 July 2009 in Bujumbura, Burundi.
The African Union Peace Support Operations Division (AU - PSOD) in collaboration with ACCORD conducted an African Standby Force (ASF) Civilian Dimension Technical Rostering Workshop from 1 - 3 July 2009 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
The Training for Peace (TfP) Programme at ACCORD participated in the African Standby Force (ASF) Evaluation Concept Workshop that was held from 21 - 23 July 2009 in Tripoli, Libya. The workshop was organised by the African Union Peace Support Operations Division (AU PSOD) in collaboration with the North African Regional Capability (NARC) in pursuant of the ASF Roadmap II which calls for an assessment of the operational readiness of the ASF and its Regional Standby Forces (RSFs) and to ensure that adequate capabilities are developed through Exercise Amani Africa which will conclude the validation process of the ASF in 2010.
On 20 July 2009 ACCORD hosted a delegation representing Nobel Peace laureate, Aung San Suu Kyi from Burma, one of the world’s most renowned advocates of non-violence. In 1991 the Nobel Peace Committee decided to award Aung San Suu Kyi the noble prize for her valiant non-violent struggle for democracy and human rights.
A significant outcome of the policy development work of TfP/ACCORD was the adoption of the recommendations in a report of the African Union (AU) African Standby Force (ASF) Civilian Dimension Staffing, Training Rostering and Recruitment (STR) Workshop in the May 2009 meetings of the African Ministers of Defence and Security (AMDS) and the African Chiefs of Defence and Security (ACDS).
ACCORD’s African Peace building Coordination Programme (APCP), in collaboration with the Peace building Office of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Republic of Liberia, hosted a Peace building training from 6-10 July 2009 at the Mamba Point Hotel in Monrovia, Liberia.
The Founder and Executive Director of ACCORD, Vasu Gounden, was invited to attend the International Advisory Board Meeting for the Interchurch Organization for Development Cooperation (ICCO), which was held in Scheveningen, The Netherlands from the 21st to the 24th of June 2009. Mr. Gounden was appointed to the ICCO board in late 2008 after attending their regional meeting that was held in Madagascar and which aimed to investigate how to implement their new innovation process in the Southern Africa region.
