As a member, and current Civilian Chair of the International Association of Peacekeeping Training Centres (IAPTC), the Training for Peace in Africa Programme at ACCORD (TfP/ACCORD) has participated at this year’s IAPTC Executive Committee Meeting. The meeting is an annual event, in which the Executive Committee planned the activities of the IAPTC for the coming year. The meeting aims to develop and plan for the 19th Annual Conference of the IAPTC, to further the agenda of the civilian dimension of peacekeeping.
The Executive Committee meeting was organised and hosted by the Cairo Regional Centre for Training on Conflict Resolution and Peacekeeping in Africa (CCCPA), from 8-10 April in Cairo, Egypt. Executive member institutions from across the world, including: the United Nations Department of Peacekeeping Operations (UNDPKO); Crises Management Centre, Finland; United States Army Peacekeeping and Stability Operations Institute (PKSOI); Centre for United Nations Peacekeeping, Indian (CUNPK); National Peace Operation Training Centre; Norwegian Police University College; China Peacekeeping Police Training Centre; Folke Bernadotte Academy; and Indonesia National Defence Force Peacekeeping Centre, participated in the consultative meeting. TfP/ACCORD was represented by Ms Seun Abiola – Peacekeeping Unit, Senior Programme Officer.
TfP/ACCORD strategised with other members of the Executive Committee, on how to promote effective responses to the current security challenges that peace operations are faced with through training. The host for the 2013 Annual Conference, which will be taking place from 28 October – 1 November 2013 in Cairo, Egypt, is the CCCPA, and other Executive Committee members.
As the elected Civilian Chair of the 2013 Executive Committee and the African representative in the Committee, the Programme will assist in the planning for the Annual IAPTC Conference, and in particular ensure the promotion of issues that are on the African peace operations’ agenda, and which contribute to further broadening the understanding of the civilian (and multidimensional) aspects of peace operations.
