ACCORD’s Peacemaking Unit recently conducted a Study Tour and Conflict Resolution Training for Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) from Sudan in Pretoria and Johannesburg, South Africa. The training aimed at enhancing the participants’ understanding of conflict analysis and intervention strategies.

A total of 23 participants from all regions of Sudan took part in the activity, from 26 – 30 July. The group was representative of the diverse Sudanese nation-state with participants drawn from CSOs, academia, development communication specialists, and government departments that work directly with conflict resolution CSOs.

The activity was divided into two parts, conflict resolution training and a study tour. Training sessions included global conflict trends, conflict analysis, negotiation, mediation, peace agreements, and transformation of structures of violence. Participants also engaged in group exercises on how to create an environment conducive to peaceful resolution of conflicts in Sudan. The training was facilitated by ACCORD’s Executive Director, Mr Vasu Gounden, Deputy Director, Mr Jerome Sachane, Peacemaking Unit Senior Analyst, Mr Karanja Mbugua and Mr Piers Pigou from the International Centre for Transitional Justice (ICTJ) in Johannesburg.

The study tour component exposed participants to the South African transition experience and participants were taken on guided tours of the Apartheid Museum and Constitution Hill in Johannesburg.

At the end of the activity, participants expressed satisfaction on the quality and relevance of the training to the Sudan context. They also expressed an interest to participate in future ACCORD training events. This initiative forms part of ACCORD’s broader ongoing commitment to Sudan that supports the peace processes in Sudan through various initiatives.
