Professor Wiseman Lumkile Nkuhlu, one of ACCORD’s founding Trustees, has been appointed to the Board of Trustees of the African Union’s (AU’s) COVID-19 Response Fund. The AU’s COVID-19 Response Fund Board of Trustees is comprises of member states, the private sector and AU representatives. Professor. Nkuhlu was appointed to represent the Southern African region.

The Response Fund is a financial instrument to mobilize and manage funds from the private sector in Africa, and other well-wishers, with the support of several African banks towards the realisation of debt relief for the Continent. The Fund operates under the supervision of the AU through its public health institution, the Africa Center for Disease Control (Africa CDC). In addition to the medical response, the fund will also allocate support to the most fragile communities in the least developed African countries, whose socio-economic activities have been impacted significantly by measures taken to mitigate the effects of the pandemic.

Professor Nkulu was the first Black Chartered accountant in South Africa. He has served as Economic Advisor to President Mbeki and was the Chief Executive of NEPAD. He is the Chancellor of the University of Pretoria.
