Strengthening knowledge and promoting participation of youth in peace and decision-making processes in Mozambique.

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) and ACCORD organised a Capacity Building Workshop on the Youth, Peace, and Security Agenda in Maputo, Mozambique, from 8 – 12 September 2025. In Mozambique, youth remain vulnerable to extremist groups. As part of SADC’s Peacebuilding Initiative, the workshop engaged government and non-governmental representatives to promote the role of youth and enhance their capacities in conflict prevention efforts.

The workshop, facilitated by local trainers, unpacked discourse on conflict management that included conflict analysis, mediation and negotiation. Through various conflict scenarios, participants discussed on how these issues can be addressed through dialogue, mediation and negotiation. The session on the Women, Peace and Security Agenda further enhanced knowledge on the inclusivity of women and the need for gender mainstreaming in policy and peace processes.

In addition to the training sessions, a representative leading the National Dialogue Process addressed the participants and provided an overview of how this process has been implemented across the country. He encouraged participation and advised on how more young people can get involved.

Participants appreciated the lessons they gained from the discussions and shared that the conflict analysis broadened their knowledge on how to better understand conflict in their respective areas. SADC and ACCORD will continue its engagements to identify further areas of support to youth both in Mozambique and the region as a whole.
