ECOWAS/KAIPTC/TfP Policy Development Workshop

The Training for Peace (TfP) Programme Advisor and Senior Programme Officer will participate in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Policy Development Workshop. The workshop, co-hosted by the Kofi Annan International Peace Training Center (KAIPTC), will be held from 8-10 February 2006 in Accra, Ghana under the auspices of the TfP Programme.

In June 2005, the KAIPTC convened an expert’s workshop that produced a proposed core civilian mission structure and task statements for future ECOWAS missions, as well as recommendations on the recruitment and selection of civilian specialists for mission service and the establishment of a civilian standby roster. The recommendations have not been adopted or implemented by ECOWAS. KAIPTC and ECOWAS are therefore hosting a 3-day policy development workshop on structuring the civilian components of future ECOWAS and African Union missions. The workshop is important for the TfP programme in that a policy decision adopted by ECOWAS will establish a lead-way for the other Regional Economic Communities to follow in establishing a regional civilian standby force.
