Community representatives from across eThekwini gathered on 24 November 2025, for a dialogue focused on enhancing local peacebuilding efforts ahead of the 2026 local government elections. The session built on the momentum of previous engagements but served a distinct purpose of creating a collaborative space for participants to reflect on conflict dynamics and co-design practical commitments to promote peace in their communities.
A key focus of the dialogue was the role of peacebuilding during election periods, which is historically known to heighten tensions and expose underlying social divides. Participants discussed the unique pressures facing communities during elections such as political intimidation, misinformation, heightened competition and the emotional stress that can strain relations among neighbours, families and local groups.
The dialogue also explored the meaning of conflict itself, with facilitators guiding participants through a discussion on defining conflict and understanding the stages through which it develops. By unpacking these stages of emergence, escalation, crisis, de-escalation and resolution, participants strengthened their ability to identify early indicators of brewing tensions and intervene constructively before disputes intensify.
One of the central components of the dialogue was the co-design of local peace commitments. In small groups, participants drafted clear and actionable commitments that they intend to take forward in their communities. These included promoting calm, encouraging dialogue among politically divided residents, sharing accurate information to counter rumours and monitoring potential hotspots where tensions may arise during the election period.
Despite acknowledging the difficulties their communities face during elections, participants expressed a strong determination to take an active role in safeguarding peace. Many emphasised the need for courage and unity, noting that sustainable peace requires local leadership, collaboration and a willingness to step forward even when conditions are tense or uncertain.
The dialogue concluded with a shared commitment to continue working collectively to prevent violence, build trust and ensure that communities across eThekwini navigate the upcoming elections peacefully and constructively.
