ACCORD participated in and supported the 7th Gender is My Agenda Campaign (GIMAC) and Regional Economic Communities (RECs) Coordination Initiative and Partners Pre-summit Meeting on the African Union’s (AU’s) Theme of the Year: Justice for Africans and People of African Descent through Reparations. This meeting took place from 8 – 10 July 2025 in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea.
The 14th GIMAC Youth Advocacy Training preceded the main GIMAC meetings. It brought together young women to equip them with the knowledge and tools to be able to engage meaningfully in the reparations agenda.
The 7th GIMAC meeting marked a pivotal moment to advance gender-transformative reparatory justice for Africa and African women and girls, in alignment with the African Union’s 2025 theme. It provided a platform for civil society organisations to deepen their engagement with the RECs in advancing the implementation of the African Union Assembly decisions, declarations, and resolutions on justice for Africans and people of African descent. This included accelerating support for the AU Convention on Ending Violence Against Women and Girls (AU CEVAWG) and the broader reparations agenda through gender-responsive policy measures.
The Peace and Security Cluster, co-led by ACCORD, focused on: 25 Years of UNSCR 1325: Implementing the Women, Peace and Security Agenda in Africa’s Reparative and Transitional Justice Processes. The Outcomes Document of the meeting commended the AU for its call on reparations as a result of colonialism, slavery, and systemic racial injustices. It further called on the AU and its Member States to adopt a common African position on reparations that is inclusive of women’s historical and contemporary demands.
