Strengthening the African Mutual Support Strategy for Peacebuilding

On 10-11 June 2026, ACCORD attended a consultative meeting on the review of the African Solidarity Initiative (ASI) in Cairo, Egypt, hosted by the African Union Centre for Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development (AUC-PCRD).

Held under the theme, Towards an African Mutual Support Strategy for Peacebuilding, the meeting was attended by representatives from the AUC-PCRD, AU Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security (DPAPS), Institute for Security Studies (ISS), Cairo International Centre for Conflict Resolution, Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding (CCCPA) and the African Centre for Research and Strategic Studies (ACRESS).

The African Solidarity Initiative (ASI) was launched by the AU in 2012 to provide a mechanism to ensure African ownership of the implementation of the PCRD policy. The ASI outlined ways in which African states could help those emerging from conflict through technical assistance, experience and expertise sharing, capacity building and resource mobilisation. However, the AU revised its PCRD policy in 2024, with an increased emphasis on the peace, security and development nexus, and so a need has arisen to relook at the ASI.

This meeting brought experts together to revise the vision, objectives and implementation of the ASI, assess its achievements and lessons learnt and examine the relevance of the ASI in the context of the new PCRD policy. As such, the meeting explored options for revitalising, reforming or renewing the ASI, and how it can promote African ownership of sustainable recovery for states that have experience conflict.
