ACCORD participated in the Civil Society Peace Table and National Action Plan (NAP) Consultation on Women Peace and Security (WPS), which was organised by the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation (IJR). This consultation took place from 25 to 26 May 2025 in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The consultation convened women representatives from various sectors in South Africa to identify priority areas that will feed into the Second Generation South African NAP on WPS. This ensured an inclusive process through engagement with governmental and non-governmental representatives, supporting this national process to contribute to the four pillars of the NAP: prevention; protection; participation; and relief and recovery.
The consultation commenced with a recognition of Africa Day and the role that women play in all areas of decision-making. The situational analysis, which set the context for discussions, helped participants identify the global and national factors impacting the country, emphasising the importance of integrating these considerations into the drafting of the NAP from a gendered perspective.
This nationwide consultation ensured inclusivity into the development of the second generation NAP on WPS. As a member of the Steering Committee of the SA NAP on WPS, ACCORD contributed to the sessions and will remain engaged with IJR to further support the drafting of the NAP.
