Dialogue sparks action on gender-based violence

On the 24th of October 2025, the community of Isipingo came together for a powerful dialogue on Gender-Based Violence (GBV), continuing a series of engagements previously held in KwaMashu and Umlazi under the Social Cohesion and Peacebuilding Programme.

The dialogue drew a strong turnout including local leaders and faith-based representatives. The focus was to unpack the causes, forms and impacts of GBV within the community while identifying collaborative solutions to combat it. Participants highlighted key contributing factors to GBV including power and control, alcohol and substance abuse, unemployment, poverty, inequality and harmful social norms. The conversation underscored how these factors often create environments where violence becomes normalized or excused.

Attendees also discussed various forms of abuse, such as physical violence including rape, as well as emotional and psychological abuse that often manifests through controlling behaviour. It was noted that the impact of GBV extends beyond victims affecting families and communities. For instance, children exposed to violence may develop behavioural issues or perpetuate abuse later in life.

A recurring concern raised was the fear of reporting abuse. Participants pointed out that victims are often reluctant to come forward due to stigma, fear of retaliation or mistrust in reporting structures especially when perpetrators hold positions of authority such as community or religious leaders. Despite this, there was collective agreement that the community has a shared responsibility to report abuse and protect victims.

The dialogue identified key reporting structures such as social workers, the South African Police Service and the Department of Health, which provides counselling and support services. Participants emphasized the importance of strengthening collaboration between these institutions and the community. To address GBV, participants proposed practical solutions such as forming community forums, conducting awareness campaigns, organizing marches and seminars and ensuring that leaders actively disseminate information to promote prevention and support initiatives.

The Isipingo dialogue reaffirmed that ending GBV requires a united community effort, grounded in education, accountability and compassion.
