Recognising the value of conflict prevention and the post-conflict and reconstruction phases.

Dr Vasu Gounden, the Founder and Executive Director of ACCORD, was invited as a resource person in the 9th International Women’s Capacity Building Programme on Conflict Resolution, Mediation and Negotiation.  The training was hosted virtually by DIRCO from 21 February – 04 March 2022, for international, and in particular African women leaders.

The presentations made by the Executive Director on 22 February 2022 provided the participants with an introduction to understanding conflict in Africa, specifically focusing on African Conflicts, mediation, negotiations and peace treaties. Dr Gounden also highlighted the trends in the Post-Colonial era; the various types of interventions and negotiations towards enhancing conflict resolution.  The relevance of stakeholder analysis and mapping was unpacked for the trainees allowing them to understand the different sources and forms of conflict.  The interactive discussions enabled the participants to recognise the value of conflict prevention as well as the post-conflict and reconstruction phases.

ACCORD has provided training to DIRCO’s Diplomatic Academy since 1995 and continues to engage in capacity building and strengthening initiatives with the South African Government Departments.
