They aim to provide succinct, rigorous and accessible research to stimulate informed and relevant debate to promote dialogue as a way to peacefully resolve conflict.

Using a human security perspective, this report identifies and analyses local and international non-governmental organisation (NGO) interventions in cases of conflicts related to the environment and environmental change in the southern Sahel of Sudan. The research was driven by the premise that valuable lessons for addressing conflicts related to the impacts of climate change may be identified from environmental interventions. |

ACCORD has been active in Burundi since 1995, playing a second-track diplomacy role in the Arusha peace negotiations that led to the Arusha Peace and Reconciliation Agreement for Burundi in 2000. As a third party advocating the inclusion of civil society in the peace process, it subsequently engaged in the promotion of peace, reconciliation and effective governance as well as the facilitation of a National Dialogue on Mechanisms for Transitional Justice. In November 2004, ACCORD established its Legal Aid Clinic Project, supported by the UNHC), to provide the local population, and specifically the returning refugees, with assistance to deal with the challenges faced by both the welcoming communities and the returnees in the repatriation process. |

ACCORD held a workshop in Durban, South Africa on 14 and 15 September 2009 on ‘Peace Agreements and Durable Peace in Africa’. The aim was to evaluate the democratisation and developmental components of African peace agreements in the light of objectives for ‘durable’ or ‘positive’ peace. Among the questions posed were: which components of peace agreements further the goals of democratisation and development, and do these components facilitate or impair possibilities for ‘durable’ peace? |
