Reflecting on the challenges with the implementation of the R-ARCSS and identify practical pathways that contribute to stabilising South Sudan's peace process.

On 02 June 2026, ACCORD facilitated a consultative roundtable on reviving South Sudan’s peace transition, held in Pretoria, South Africa. The strategic consultation brought together a select group of approximately fifteen senior practitioners, regional experts, African policy actors, and international partners with long-standing engagement in South Sudan.

The roundtable was convened at a critical juncture for South Sudan’s transition. The Revitalised Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCSS) remains the central framework for preventing renewed conflict, yet its implementation has been hampered by delays in transitional benchmarks, incomplete security arrangements, weakening trust between parties, and renewed armed confrontations in parts of the country. The consultation reflected on South Sudan’s current crisis as both an implementation challenge and a political confidence crisis, requiring urgent recommitment and more coherent regional and international engagement.

The engagement enabled a shared strategic assessment of the current political and security dynamics in South Sudan, identified the most urgent risks to the peace process, and explored practical options for enhancing the implementation of the R-ARCSS. On 03 June 2026, the engagement was followed by a discussion focused on the broader regional context, including the situation in Sudan.

ACCORD’s facilitation of this roundtable reflects its ongoing commitment to supporting African-led mediation, conflict prevention, and peace process engagement across the continent, particularly in complex transition environments where political and security fragility demand candid, high-level strategic dialogue.
