On 20–21 May 2026, ACCORD participated in the Independent Electoral Commission’s (IEC) stakeholder engagement with civil society organisations to strengthen collaboration on voter education and review operational preparedness for the 2026 Local Government Elections.
The engagement which was convened as a follow up to the Electoral Commission KZN Multi Stakeholder Engagement, provided a platform for the IEC to update stakeholders on key milestones and initiatives undertaken to ensure the effective administration of the elections. Discussions focused on the Commission’s operational readiness, including preparations for voter registration, voting station management, ballot counting procedures, and mechanisms for handling objections and disputes. The IEC also outlined the technological enhancements being introduced to improve the efficiency, transparency, and integrity of the electoral process, these including the procurement of more devices to enhance the efficiency and productivity at voting stations.
Civil Society Stakeholders received updates on matters of ward demarcation and delimitation processes with the IEC encouraging attendees to raise public awareness about the importance of community members verifying their ward allocation and their eligibility ahead of the elections to prevent confusion and disappointment on election day. The IEC reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that all eligible citizens are able to participate in the elections through accurate voter registration processes and well-managed polling operations.
The engagement underscored the important role of civil society organisations as partners in voter education and community outreach. By working collaboratively with the IEC, these organisations can help promote electoral integrity, increase public awareness, and foster peaceful and inclusive participation throughout the election period.
