On 17 June 2025 Dr Vasu Gounden, the Founder and Executive Director of ACCORD, was invited to facilitate a session on Security and Regulatory Challenges at the Transport Evolution Africa CEO Forum. This event is taking place at the Gallagher Estate Conference Centre in Gauteng, South Africa, from June 17-18, 2025. The overarching theme of the conference is “Overcoming Challenges, Unlocking Investment: Driving the Future of Transport and Logistics in Africa Forward.”
The session aimed to address the impacts of security threats, regulatory inconsistencies, customs processes, and compliance burdens across various modes of transport. Key questions discussed included which collaborative measures could enhance security across transport modes; how customs and regulatory reforms could improve cross-border operations and air cargo movement; and what role data and intelligence sharing plays in the security of rail, port, and aviation.
By collaborating across borders, sectors, and modes, Africa can unlock large economic value in logistics. The theme “Overcoming Challenges, Unlocking Investment: Driving the Future of Transport and Logistics in Africa Forward” is critical for Africa’s growth as it addresses infrastructure gaps, trade barriers, and security issues that hinder economic progress. By unlocking investment in transport and logistics, Africa can modernize its systems, create jobs, and attract foreign capital, fuelling regional trade and industrialization. A well-developed transport sector is foundational for increasing intra-African trade, enhancing food security, and supporting urban mobility. With a young, innovative population, the continent can leverage technology and sustainable practices to connect communities, reduce costs, and drive sustainable development. Ultimately, overcoming these challenges will enable Africa to compete globally and achieve long-term economic prosperity.
The Transport CEO Forum is a key highlight of the Transport Evolution Africa Forum and Expo, Africa’s largest transport event, taking place from 17 – 19 June 2025 in Johannesburg, South Africa.
This exclusive roundtable, conducted under Chatham House rules, provides executives with a unique platform to candidly exchange experiences, challenges, and insights with their peers from across the continent. Topics for discussion are carefully selected by the CEOs ahead of the Forum, focusing on critical issues such as financial investment and viability, regulatory reforms, labour and skills development, operational efficiency, emerging technologies, energy and greenhouse gas standards, and competition on an international scale.
