On 11–12 July 2026 ACCORD participated in the Second Policy Conference of the Tangier Process on the Nexus between Peace, Security and Development, held in Mombasa, Republic of Kenya. ACCORD was represented by one of its Senior Political Advisors, H.E. Ambassador Welile Nhlapo. The conference was convened by the African Union Commission (AUC) through its Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security (PAPS), and brought together senior representatives from African Union (AU) Member States, Regional Economic Communities and Regional Mechanisms (RECs/RMs), multilateral financial institutions, development partners, civil society organisations and the private sector.
The two-day conference was structured around five panels addressing mutually reinforcing dimensions of the Peace, Security and Development Nexus: the implementation of the Tangier Declaration; the role of AI-driven and youth-led innovation; the relationship between military expenditure and development trade-offs; the contribution of multilateral financial institutions to Agenda 2063 and fragility reduction; and lessons from the African Facility to Support Inclusive Transitions (AFSIT) for supporting complex political transitions.
Across all sessions, a consistent call emerged for moving beyond aspirational frameworks towards practical implementation, with participants calling for a credible roadmap, stronger cooperation among AU institutions, RECs/RMs and Member States, and more deliberate efforts to involve youth in both the design and monitoring of Nexus-related programmes.
Preceding the main conference, ACCORD also participated in a High-Level Roundtable on the Global Order Reset held on 10 July 2026, which provided a candid forum for senior thinkers and practitioners to reflect on the structural shifts reshaping the global order and their implications for Africa. Questions of common African foreign policy, the legitimacy of existing multilateral institutions including the United Nations Security Council, and Africa’s ability to leverage its assets and define its own interests featured prominently in the debate.
ACCORD’s participation in the Tangier Process reflects its ongoing commitment to supporting African-led approaches to peace, security and sustainable development. The Tangier Process represents a significant continental platform for translating the normative ambitions of Agenda 2063 into integrated, practical action.
